Hi, I'm Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this next segment I'm going to talk about grocery shopping. Shopping around the premises of the store to select whole foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh meats, dairy, fresh whole grains, are the best way to select healthy options. The only items that you generally should be seeking out in the isles are cereals, canned beans, and tomato products. There are a few other options, such as bottled water and things like that, but it's very important when you're trying to lose weight to try to select the healthiest whole foods as possible. When you're going through, you want to start in the produce department because that will help us to start filling up our basket full of all those wonderful, colorful nutrients that fruits and vegetables provide. Next, you might want to move over to the bakery where you pick up your whole wheat fresh bread. Even tortillas, sometimes bakeries will have whole grain tortillas. You want to try to make sure you store these foods in the refrigerator because they do mold quickly when they do not have preservatives added to them. Then you want to move over to the fresh meats department. You want to try to save the meats and the dairies last because those items need to stay refrigerated. If there are a variety of fresh meats, it's a good idea to try to put them in bags so that if any juices leak out, they don't leak on your fresh fruits and vegetables and contaminate them with any bacteria that may be on the packaging. After you have selected your meats, then you'll want to move over to the dairy where you'll find your low fat or one percent cottage cheese and milk. Sometimes people prefer to drink soy milk. Also, don't forget your eggs, and then if you need any frozen products you can go ahead at that time and shop for your frozen products. Remember on hot days that you want to carry a cooler in your car with ice so that you can keep your meats especially, and your produce cool so that bacteria does not grow from the time you leave the store until you get home. That is the best way to grocery shop for health and losing weight.
