Best Foods for Energy and Weight Loss -- Kathleen Zelman -- UHC TV

Wouldn't it be great if we could just take a pill that would give us the energy to get through the day and also help us lose weight? Unfortunately, that's not the case. One of our viewers wants to know, "What are some good foods that will give me energy and still help me lose weight?" So think smart carbs. Smart carbs are those healthy carbohydrates that are gonna be energizing. Things like fruits and vegetables, and whole grain, and dairy, beans, those are all good examples of of smart carbs that are energizing. But, usually they're going to do the job best if they're combined with other foods. So in order to give you that sustained energy and not have peaks and valleys in your blood sugar, you need to combine those smart carbs with healthy fats or lean proteins. And when it comes to calories, the protein, the meat, and fish, and nuts --those kin- those sources of protein-- and the healthy fats, like nuts and avocados, and olive oil, and canola oil, those are all good for you, but that's where they're more concentrated in calories than most smart carbs. So that's where you need to play to watch your portions. So, if you looking for wonderful food ideas, it's abundant. All over the Internet you can go to sources that like Eating Well, and Cooking Light, and MyPlate.Gov, and there are all kind of suggestions for healthy foods. But, here are a few examples in my that I love. I love smoothies, fruit and vegetable smoothies, egg scrambles --so eggs with some vegetables, fruits and nuts, trail mixes --that's a good energizing, but now that's where you really have to watch your portion as well. A bean soup, fabulous. Fills you up, that volume of there, and you've got the protein, and the carbs, and it really helps energize as well as keep you feeling full. Whole grain cereal with fruit and dairy. Yogurt parfait, another great example. So just think about foods that you love, because you wanna eat foods you love, but carbs are what's gonna give you the energy. Pair them with protein and fats, smaller portions. Watch those calories, 'cause the calories are going to come from the amount that you eat. Take liberties in the fruits and vegetables, but in the other areas, you just need to be a little bit more cautious if you're looking to whittle your waistline.
