Healthy Weight for Your Height -- Kathleen Zelman -- UHC TV

Have you ever wondered how much you should weigh? One of our viewers wants to know how much should I weigh for my height? We use a tool called the Body Mass Index, or BMI calculator to determine height for weight. So you input your height and your weight and you come up with a number. You can find the tool, this calculator at cdc.gov or any place on the internet. They're all the same. What you want to do is to make sure that you're in the healthy range. Because being at a healthy weight is much more important than being at an ideal weight. Healthy weight is defined as less than twenty five. Um, because as you get heavier and your Body Mass Index is larger, it may increase your risk for heart disease, diabetes, certain forms of cancer, stroke and even death. So it is important to keep your Body Mass Index below twenty five. Another way you can determine, roughly, what your weight should be, and remember we are all individuals and there is no such thing as one size fits all. But ladies start at a hundred pounds and then for every inch over five feet, you get five pounds. So, if you are five five it would be roughly 125 pounds, give or take ten percent. You add ten percent if you are large boned, decrease ten percent if you are petite. Guys, you would start with a hundred six pounds, and then it's six pounds for every inch plus or minus ten percent. These are ball parks that will help you determine how much you should weigh. But, actually as you get older your waist circumference may be more important than how much you weigh because of the health risks associated with the abdominal, carrying excess weight in the abdominal area. So ladies, get that waist below thirty five and men, your number is forty. Good luck.
